Escher

Maurits Cornelis Escher, was born in Leeuarden (Netherlands) on June 17, 1898 and he died on March 27, 1972 with 73 years. He was the youngest son of George Arnold Escher and his second wife, Sara Gleichman.

When he was young he had bad marks except in drawing. In 1919, he attended the Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts.

In 1922 he travelled to Spain and Italy where he met his wife, Jetta Umiker. Of all his trips, Escher remained very impressed by the Alhambra (one of his sources of inspiration).

Though he didn’t have a mathematics education, he could fuse the artistic drawing with the mathematics. His works had a strong mathematical component and he was drawing impossible objects as Necker cube and the Penrose Triangle.

I have chosen Escher because he could fuse two areas that for many people are unamicable. In addition he changed totally the way of seeing the art.

Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison:

Thomas Alva Edison born on February 11, 1847 and dies on October 18, 1931 at the age of 84. He was an American inventor, scientist, and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb.

Edison became a telegraph operator after saving a 13 years old boy from the rails. The father of this young boy trained Edison as a telegraph operator. He was married at the age of 24 with Mary Stilwell , a 16-year-old girl, whom he had met txo months earlier. He began his career as an inventor in Newark, New Jersey, with the automatic repeater and his other improved telegraphic devices, but his first important invention was the phonograph in 1877. Edison was active in business right up to the end. Just months before his death in 1931, the Lackawanna Railroad implemented electric trains in suburban service from Hoboken to Gladstone, Montclair and Dover in New Jersey. Finally Thomas Edison died of complications of diabetes on October 18, 1931, in his home.

We have choosed Thomas Edison, because we think that he’s an interesting person because he had patented a lot of invents like the bulb, invents that nowadays are simple but thanks to the invents of those people we are so technologically advanced. Also we have chosen Edison because he has around 1500 patents, that are a lot of patents, that means he had passed a lot of time estuding and innoving.

Elvis

Elvis Aaron Presley, also known as the “King of Rock and Roll” was born January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. His twin brother was stillborn, so Elvis grew up as an only child. In 1948, at the age of 13, he moved with his family to Memphis and graduated from High School in 1953.

Elvis’ music influences were a combination of the pop and country music of the time, the music he heard in church and the music he heard as a teenager in Memphis. In 1954, he began singing with the Sun Records company in Memphis. One year later, in 1955, his contract was sold to RCA Victor. Another year later, in 1956, he was international. *Elvis Presley*

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, and he died on August 16, 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a very good singer and guitar player, often named “King of the Rock and Roll” or “the King”.

His first performance was in Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show, October 3, 1945, dressed as a cowboy and had 10 years. He began his career in 1954 in Memphis and he became the icon of the twentieth century popular music. During his career, he starred in 31 films, many of which were devoted to their songs. Recorded a total of 150 albums and won 14 Grammy nominations to the National Academy of arts and sciences. And he has led for many years, the list of highest grossing dead artists for their products.

We chose Elvis Presley because we think that he is a genius because he revolutionised the whole music world with his cool music. He was the spark that changed popular music an entire generation with his famous toupee, his singing style, his aggressive moves on stage, his charisma, and other qualities is what is currently allowed to be one of the greatest musical figures of history in other words, a genius.

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519), was an Italian polymath. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance man, a man whose unquenchable curiosity was equaled only by his powers of invention.
Leonardo was and is renowned primarily as a painter. Two of his works, the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, are the most famous, most reproduced and most parodied portrait and religious paintings of all time.

I chose Leonardo da Vinci because I think he was a complete man because he wan painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer. Finally he was a complete genius

Mojinos Escozíos

The band of Mojinos Escozios is composed by five mans; two of them are Catalan origin and the three others are Andaluces. The name of the components is Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Juan Ramón Artero, Vidal Barja Jr., Juan Carlos Barja and Vidal Barja.  They are a group with a special sarcasm that characterizes them.  Years ago they performed in Barcelona and the police forced them to stop the show because neighbors’ complaint. One day, the producer Esteve Coll sees them in a show and they all decided to work together.
This band birth after that, but is in 1996 when they released their first album called: Mojinos Escozios.  After these recognitions as a music band, they came quickly famous and they sold many records. I would highlight the name they use for their albums, because they are curios and hilarious. Their discography is:
Mojinos Escozíos (1996); Demasiao perro pa trabajá, demasiao carvo pal rocanró (1998);
I have chosen them to do this work because they are idols to me. Their sarcasm, the way they take life, the absence of the ridiculous’ sense that makes them even bigger than they are.
And finally their very particular humor, which is what I like. One of the most fun of this particular group is the great majority of their albums, is based on others singers or movies or other known phenomena, ridiculing them.                                                                                                                   For all these reasons and many more, I think that Mojinos Escozios are genius because one of my dreams was to be witness one of their concerts, and when I arrived I realized nobody would laugh so much in so little time with a music band. Because they are more than unique, they are; “El Sevilla”, “El Chicho”, “El Vidalita”, “El Zippy” and “El puto”, they are the Mojinos Escozios.

Cédric Gracia

Cédric Gracia is a French mountain biker who has born the 23 May 1978 in Pau (the French Pyrenees). He started riding in his childhood as a BMX rider. Also he has passed a part of his infancy in the Alps with a host family when he was a skier.
In 2001 he started racing downhill with the Volvo/ cannondale bike team. In 2003 Cedric won the Red bull Rampage a very important freeride competition. During his career Cedric has won some UCI world cup races. Also he has been 2nd in the Red Bull Lisbon downtown. But, Cedric is not characterized for his results; he is one of the bakers who has more fans. Cedric is an old school biker, he definitely is a: Show Man.

For me Cedric is a genius because now a days is not the best biker because we have persons like Sam hill who are not humans, they are spectacular. But people wants something different, people wants to get fun. Cedric Gracia is a very good rider who has a particular personality who makes him crazier and makes him a showman. In a world cup race, people applaud more him than the winner and that means that Cedric is a Genius.

Robert Downey Jr.

Downey was born April 4, 1965 in Manhattan, New York. He is producer, singer and songwriter but above all is an actor. His father, RobertDowney Sr., is an actor, writer, producer, cinematographer, and director of underground films. Downey made his screen debut at the age of five
when he appeared in one of his father's films, Pound (1970), and has worked consistently in film and television ever since.
Downey started landing roles in bigger films such as Air America (1990), Soapdish (1991) and Natural Born Killers (1994). These higher-profile roles eventually led to his being cast as Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 film Chaplin, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best
Actor. Between 1996 and 2001, Downey was frequently arrested on drug- related charges and went through several drug treatment programs, but had difficulty staying clean. In 2007, Downey was cast as the title character in the comic book adaptation Iron Man which premiered in the spring of 2008, making almost $100 million in the United States and Canada during its opening
weekend. Next, he played the titular lead character in Guy Ritchie's adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, released Christmas 2009, for which Downey won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of the famous detective. He reprised the role of Tony Stark in the 2010 sequel, Iron Man 2.

I choose him because I love his movies and because he is my favourite actor. I think that is a genius in the world of the cinema because he does everything, but he is the best when he interprets a main character like Sherlock Holmes, Iron Man or Charlie Chaplin.

He began playing tennis at age of three and during his junior stage he obtained important great results. He became a professional tennis player on 1998 but he didn’t stand out until 2001. In just three years (from 2001 to 2004) Federer arrived in the first place of the ranking.

Because of his successful career, Federer has won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in four consecutive years (2005-2008) and was named player of the decade by the ITF.
We have chose Roger Federer because we love the way that he plays tennis (all his shots seem that have been taken from the “Tennis Encyclopaedia”!). Also, because we think that he is the best player of all time (so we think that everyone have to know who is this man!). To conclude, we can say that Federer has marked an epoch in the history of tennis, and not everyone con does it.
HE IS THE GENIUS OF THE TENNIS, HE IS PROFESSOR FEDERER!

He was a swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, armaments manufacturer. He is famous because he is the inventor of dynamite and because the prizes that carryied his name
He was born in an ingenious family, and he and his brother had a good humanistic and scientific education. When Nobel was 18, he wentt to the United States to study chemistry for four years and worked for a short periood under John Ericsson ( an important American inventor and mechanical engineer).

Young Alfred returned to Sweden to continue his explosive investigation and in 1867, he discovers, after hard work, the dynamite, a surer explosive than nitroglycerine.

We have choice Alfred Nobel like our genius because We think that his inventions are the most interesting, above all the dynamite. Moreover I think that all the people know the Nobel prizes, but a lot this people don't know Alfred Nobel's history. We choose him because we want to let peoplpe know Alfred Bernhard Nobel history.

Woody Allen

His real name is Allan Stewart Konigsberg, but we know him as Woody Allen. He was born the 1rst December 1935 in the USA. He is an American screenwriter, director, actor, comedian, jazz musician, author and playwright. To do his films and theatre pieces, Allen thinks about the different literature, sexuality, philosophy, psychology, Jewish identity (he can make jokes because he’s Jewish) ideas.
Allen is distinguished because he is a very good film director, he started doing some dramas and he moved to comedies in which women have a very special role. Then, he is very characteristic in the cinema’s world because he is very quick doing films, he does a film per year more or less and because in his films, the actress and actors that appear are always the same. One example is Scarlett Johansson. Then we could say that he acts in more than one film from him, like “Love and death”, “Manhattan” an others. At the same time he is screenwriter too. Moreover, we can find him in some European films. Nowadays, he is working in a film titled Midnight in Paris, with the French First Lady, Carla Bruni. The plot follows a family travelling to Paris for a business trip, and there is a shooting. The action takes place in Paris in the summer of 2010.
But he doesn’t do only cinema, he is very interested in jazz music and he is a jazz clarinetist. Since he was very young, he played in some jazz festivals. He joined the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the New Orleans Funeral Ragtime Orchestra in performances that provided the film score for his 1973 comedy “Sleeper, and performed in a rare European tour in 1996, which became the subject of the documentary Wild Man Blues. Then, he is an author, he writes some theater pieces and they’ve been published.
We have chosen this character because for us is a really genius. He is able to do a lot of things at the same time and he does them very well. We also believe that is one of the geniuses on cinema of XXI century and surely  of XXII century.

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was a poet and a short story writer. He lived only 40 years (1809 – 1849) but he has gone down in history as the master of terror.
Poe was born into an acting family but at the age of 3 his parents died so he grew up with his Godfather. He had drinking problems so he got fired of his editor job. In 1836, he married his 13 year-old cousin, who passed away in 1847. He died in Baltimore in 1849 because of his alcohol problems.
The Raven and Other Poems (1845) was what made Edgar Allan Poe famous, not only in the United States but abroad.  His recognition from this work had catapulted Poe from a well respected editor and critic to one of the best writers of all the times.

We chose to talk about the genius of Edgar Allan Poe because we really like his poems and short stories. He has a brilliant way of writing: it keeps you tense throughout the story, as in The Pit and the Pendulum, when you read it you can feel the steel in your own skin.

Unit 6 - Hey, you're a genius! - Task

Ok - it's time for you to talk about someone you consider a genius. You need to: 1) tell us the most relevant details about this person; why was/is s/he relevant?; 2) tell us why you admire the character and 3) send us a link to a picture you'd like to show. Remember to sign your comments. Here is an example:

Leonardo da Vinci was the renaissance man par excellence. He was born in 1452 and lived for 67 years, during which he cultivated the fields of botanics, mathematics, engineering, hydrodynamics, optics, anatomy, painting, sculpture, architechture, writing and music. He was a very curious man, and many of his works are considered masterpieces, as for example Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Apart from these works, many others have become really famous, as (among others) the Vitruvian Man (aka The Canon of Proportions).
His work, apart from being influential in different areas of knowledge, is the example of an extreme sense of curiosity, zeal for work and interest in life in general, which is an example to follow by present day people.

Coco Chanel

Her real name was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. She was a fashion designer. She was born in France in 1883 and died in 1971 with 88 years old. She was the one of the most powerful women after world War I. Also, Time magazine recognized her as one of the one hundred most influential people of the 20th century.

Her mother worked in the poorhouse where Gabrielle was born. She died when Gabrielle was six and then her father abandoned her in a nun’s orphanage. When she was 18, she left the orphanage and worked as a café singer, where she takes’s the nickname of Coco, which it comes from one of the songs she used to sing. After, thanks to two lovers, she funded her first store in Paris in 1910 selling hats to rich women. Then, she added stores in other cities of France and began making clothes. After, she launched her first perfume, Chanel No.5, which was the first to feature a designer’s name, that now it’s also produced. Then, she was so famous and continues to work as a fashion designer.

Her designs were revolutionary for the time. I think that she’s a genius because she created designs that are still popular today. She has left us the little black dress (know as LBD). She was the first to introduce blacks a fashion colour. She took the colour once associated with mourning and showed just how chic it could be for eveningwear. She has left us also the perfume Chanel no. 5. it was and is a star-perfume, because even Marilyn Monroe in one of her interviews says that she go to bed every night only with two drops of this perfume. Finally, she gives us other things like men’s pullover sweaters, sailor jackets, straight skirts and trademark suits, the new working costume. She was often inspired by the everyday clothes worn by working people around her like the white collar and cuffs of a waitress. She also popularized the use of fake jewels.

Salvador Dalí

Salvador Dalí (May 11, 1904 - January 23, 1989)

  • We considered Salvador Dalí a genius because these creations are very originals for surrealism and composition. He works all forms of painting from Pointillism, Cubism ... and others. He’s a painting, he transform the reality an abstract form. Dali using the dreams an form to express your feelings.

Gerard Piqué

Piqué was born the 2 February 1987 in Barcelona; it is a Spanish football player and one of the most betters defenses. He is characterized by his size, excellent placement on the field, be almost unbeatable in one to one and for his quality when he release the ball from behind, this makes him a very good defense, also is known because he play in FCBarcelona and in the Spanish Football Federation.

From he was 10 years old; he played in quarry’s Barcelona in different categories. He played in the inferiors categories with Football Club Barcelona, but he signed his first contract with the Manchester United, where he trained as a professional.

He played in Manchester United in October 2004, and he signed his second contract with this club in February 2005. In 26 March 2006, he played as a starter in the team. After, in summers, the Real Zaragoza and the Manchester United talked and they arrived an agreement. In May 2007, he comes again with the Manchester United.

Continuing his carrer, in 27 May 2008 Piqué signed his contract with FCBarcelona. With Pep Guardiola, Piqué became one of the defenses most important. He demonstrate his ability to take the ball from behind and his ability to join the attack. The 2 May 2009, scored the sixth goal before the historic game, Real Madrid-FCBarcelona.

He wins the King's Cup, the First Division title in Spain, the UEFA Champions League and become the world champion.

Now, Gerard Piqué, has renovated the contract with FCBarcelona to 2015.

I chose Gerard Piqué, because I think he is a good football player, does his work so impressive, protects your computer, try not to let anyone who has the ball, passes a few extraordinarily rich, and help in attack without difficulty.
I think he's a genius, and that has helped both Barcelona and Spain to win the titles won, to enjoy the game and grow as a professional every day.

John Lennon

John Winston Lennon was born the 9th October 1940 at Oxford Street’s hospital (Liverpool), during a German bomber.During his adolescence he bought Lp’s imported from United States. This is how he discovered Rhythm n’ Blues. In 1956 he created the Quarrymen, the band who will finally be The Beatles, at 1958.The Beatles became one of the greatest bands in the history of music. Even after they split up (1970), they still are. After leaving The Beatles, John Lennon continued his career in solitary during ten years. Finally the 8th December 1980 at eleven o’clock he died murdered by Mark David Chapman as John Winston Ono Lennon (Ono for his wife, Yoko Ono). His legacy still remains today.

I choice John Lennon like a genius because I like his music and his ideas and because he removed masses and consciences. Also, I think that a figure who stills latent today after thirty years later of his death is not nobody. Finally if furthermore if all the people look beyond his name and they try to understand his words and message he could change the world.

Steven Jobs

Steven Paul Jobs (born February 24, 1955) is an American business magnate and inventor. He is well known for being the co-founder and chief executive officer of Apple. Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios. In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios.

In the late 1970s, Jobs, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula, and others, designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of the mouse-driven graphical user interface which led to the creation of the Macintosh.

I chose Steven Jobs because I think he has revolutionized the electronically industry and the computers’ image too. He helped to build the future computer’s industry and was one of the firsts to developed computer’s movies. He’s working again with Machintosh Inc. and I really think what he did whit Pixar and Apple it will be very important in the future on this industry.

Antoni Gaudí

Gaudi was born the 15 June 1852 in Reus; it was a Spanish architect and the best representative artist of the Catalan’s modernism.

His most outstanding qualities are the incredible sense for volume and geometry, and his talent for imagine and create new things never seen before, like his famous technique “el trencadís”. But, the most impressive of Gaudi, is his memory and imagination that allowed him to think and make his projects without needing to do a plan.
It was firstly influenced by the neo-gothic art, but finally Gaudi enters on the modernism and becomes a prestige architect hired by the richest on Barcelona. It’s here, in the capital city of Catalonia, where he builds his most important and relevant projects like: La Pedrera, El Parc Güell, or Casa Batlló.
Like most geniuses, his death was also particularly. The 7 June, in the morning, when he went to the church, like every day, he was hit by a tram. For his dirty aspect, no one recognized him, and no one help him, only a vagabond that helped by the police, takes a taxi to take Gaudi from the hospital. 3 days later, the 10 June 1926, Antoni Gaudi dies in Barcelona.

I consider Gaudi like a genius because of all his projects makes in Barcelona, and around Catalonia. All of theirs are spectacularly different from the others things build before, and after him. Gaudi has the capacity to imagine estrange things and make it real without use plans, having all the information in his mind and also improvising at the same moment that the work is been done.
It’s still trying to finish the Sagrada Familia, one of his most important works, which he left unfinished when he death. The difficulty for finish this work, is a clear example of Gaudi’s prodigious mind, because he thought to finish it without planes, in a short period of time.

Tsar Alexander I

Alexander Pavlovich Romanov, also known as Tsar Alexander I of All the Russias, was born in Sankt Petersburg in 1777 and died in Taganrog in 1825.

He was the favourite grand son of Empress Catherine the Great, but he didn’t succeed her to the Throne. After his father’s death (Paul I), he became Tsar of All the Russias in 1801. He was proclaimed King of Poland in 1815 and he was also the first Grand Duke of Finland and Lithuania.

He ruled Russia during the chaotic period of the Napoleonic Wars. In the first part of his reign, he introduced liberal reforms, but during the second part of his reign, he became more arbitrary.

He died in 1825 in suspicious circumstances, and his brother succeeded him to the Throne as Nicolas I.

I choose him because he defended his country with braveness and intelligence against Napoleon’s invasion (later called Great Patriotic War by Russians), then, during Napoleon’s retreat; he allied Prussia, Austria, Great Britain, and some other countries and he finally marched into Paris, ending the Napoleonic period. His exploits in war inspirited Tchaikovsky’s Overture 1812, Tolstoy’s War and Peace and some other Russian productions.

Cleopatra
Cleopatra, was born the 69 b.C. and she died the 30 b.C. she started reigning with seventeen years old with her brother Ptolemy, she married him. (was not strange because they conserve the royal blood)
The Queen wanted to govern alone and to take the power from his brother, this supposed a serious clash with the supporters of his brother- husband. She goes to exile in Syria.
Julius Caesar, intervened in the conflict to arrange the situation between brothers. Cleopatra is attracted by Julius Caesar and she tries to conquer him being wrapped in a carpet and offering as gift. Julius Caesar unrolls the carpet and see the Egyptian queen and falls in love. they will have a son called Caesarion.
When Cleopatra’s brother died and she was an absolute queen of Egypt. When Julius Caesar died, Cleopatra met Mark Antony and started relationship whit him. They lived through his love painfully because Octavius’ troops came to Alexandria and provoked the death of both. The queen committed suicide.
In my opinion Cleopatra is a powerful woman oh his period. In the past a woman could not reign alone. Cleopatra achieved to dominate a country without the presence of a man.
We can say that her power comes her from wit, insight and his beauty. She started a relationship with two very important men. She was converted in empress of Rome. With her insight she attained to be absolute queen of Egypt.

Four month later Morrison died with 27 years for a heroin overdose in his bath.

I choose this character because I think Jim Morrison and The Doors change completely the music of the sixties in America. Also I think that Jim Morrison was a very particular and a little strange person for a lot of people but also a reference and a genius for the other people because he makes a lot of contributions in the world of the music but also in the world of the poetry.

David Copperfield

David Copperfield was born in New Jersey in 1956,he is an example of genius because he is the biggest magician of all the times. Constantly he schemes, he surprises, he entertains and he fascinates people. He began his professional career when he was 12 years old. He was the younger person admitted in “Magicians American company”. When he was 16 years old, he was already a teacher of magic in the University of New York and he silenced the assistants to Broadway's theatre with his favorite test: the "Disappearance". But he was not late in signing his first contracts in television. He founded the Magic Project in 1982 about a program of rehabilitation to help physically handicapped patients, whose program is in use in more than 1000 hospitals. His more famous tricks include making disappear the Statue of the Freedom. Also, Copperfield has pulled off some amazing stunts over the years, including levitating across the Grand Canyon and walking through the Great Wall of China.

We consider David Copperfield to be the best magician of the world, because he realized and elaborated magic tricks and he keep the attention to the spectators. Moreover, his tricks are unique and unrepeatable. It’s impressive that a child has surprised the people with his tricks and he has been considered a genius. We believe that he has a good experience and a capacity to create new tricks. There are unimaginable tricks, as for example, to make disappear the statue of liberty.
He guided to unsuspected heights of art and imagination neither that the magicians or the spectators not imagined in the past. So that, we think that David Copperfield has given a new meaning to the word magic.
All that, he can see reflected in the quantity of awards that he has received, as for example: one star in the walk of the reputation of Hollywood between others. But, also, not leave anybody indifferent!

I think he's a genius by his singing and his voice. I also think that is a genius and I admire your music, all styles that you have sung. I also find it has much merit since it has forged a legend being blind. There is a movie that dramatizes his life and got two oscars.
